I have lived in Philly pretty much my whole life, but I have never considered myself to be a ‘Philly girl.’ While planning to use my vacation time, the thought of doing a ‘staycation’ came to mind. This meant four days of trying to embrace my space to fall in love with Philadelphia.
My efforts started on Friday. I went to the movies and saw “Kidnapped.” I closed out my day hanging with my niece. #auntieduty
On Saturday, determined to live my best tourist life, I ventured through Center City and somehow ended up at Penn’s Landing eating funnel cake.
Sunday was church, followed by an after church nap.

Although I wanted my staycation to include more activities, like visiting the Observation Deck, taking a Big Bus Tour, going to the zoo, or visiting a museum, I chose to go to the Aquarium instead. Is the Aquarium in Philadelphia? No. The Aquarium is in Camden… so technically it’s Philly adjacent?
Close enough.
Planning my staycation taught me a few things.
- Groupon is your friend. I hate paying full price for anything. Coupon code? Yes, please! I chose to do less activities because I was being
cheapfrugal. Don’t go broke playing #DoratheExplorer. Checking #Groupon is the best way to be a tourist in your hometown. - Embrace your place. We often spend so much time looking for what’s next, that we fail to enjoy the now. How long have you lived where you are? How much of that place have you explored? Before you book another destination getaway, wander around your hometown. You may be surprised at what you find.
- Be comfortable. Unless you happen to run into someone you know, no one knows where you are from. Live your best tourist life! Be cheesy. Take pictures and buy souvenirs. Even if you see a place everyday, you’ve created a memory because you’ve experienced it in a different way.
