How Dry I Am: Spiritual Dryness

Untitled design (13)My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?  Psalm 42:2 (NIV)

Not sure if anyone remembers the Warner Bros. cartoon, “Merrie Melodies.” While developing the concept for this series, I was constantly reminded of the cartoon mouse from “Naughty but Mice.” Sniffles the Mouse developed a cold and went to the nearest drug store for a remedy. Apparently, poor Sniffles didn’t have the best reading comprehension skills. He somehow bypassed shelves stocked with cough syrup and ended up chugging a spoonful of what claimed to be an “XLNT Cold Cure”-125% proof alcohol.

Slightly inebriated, Sniffles stumbles around the drug store and makes friends with an electric razor who also has a cold. In true friend fashion, Sniffles decides to share his newfound cold remedy with his magical shaver friend.

Both characters end up drunk.

Who didn’t see that coming?

Drunk enough to sing.

Never a good sign.

“How dry I am, how dry I am. Nobody knows, how dry I am.”

Although typically related to alcohol, I believe this song relates to spiritual dryness as howling-red-622247-unsplashwell.

Many of us experience periods of spiritual dryness. Just like Sniffles, on the inside, we too feel, “Nobody knows how dry I am.”

God knows.

Spiritual dryness typically feels like you are depleted, distant and disconnected from God.

Some causes of spiritual dryness include:

  • Hurt or damaged emotions
  • Busyness and distractions
  • Doubt or lack of trust in God
  • Sin and disobedience.

2016 is the year of being “thirsty.” Though this term has developed a negative connotation in our culture, thirsty is the posture God wants you to maintain. Thirsty is a perpetual state of need and desperation for God’s presence and power.

Part II of this series will help with recognizing the symptoms of spiritual dryness, highlight various biblical characters and their experiences with spiritual dryness. Part III will offer ways to move from empty to full.

God knows how dry you are.

Are you thirsty yet?
